Dear Friends and Colleagues,
UW-Madison is one of a few universities in the United States, where a medical school, a school of veterinary science, a school of agriculture, a school of engineering, and a law school are all on the same campus. UW-Madison provides the optimal environment for interdisciplinary approaches. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted UW-Madison’s need for continued interdisciplinary frontline health initiatives, like those being developed by GHI, and we are asking for your donation to support the Institute’s future.
GHI’s five focus areas—emerging and infectious diseases; climate and land use change; resource security, including food, water, and energy; social, cultural, and economic equity; and human, animal, and plant health—capture a comprehensive view of global health. This holistic, One Health-based approach leverages the expertise of UW’s 21 schools and colleges and is essential to understanding and tackling the intricate connections among health, equity, and the environment.
In two short years under my leadership, GHI has successfully implemented its strategic vision to establish and grow a robust network of One Health Centers and projects in Colombia, India, Mexico, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and South Africa. A small but mighty team, GHI provides a unique forum, strategically linking multidisciplinary talent and expertise from UW–Madison with global partners in academia, industry, governments, and NGOs. GHI’s OHC network offers researchers and students both here and abroad access to transdisciplinary partnerships, knowledge sharing, innovation, and local-to-global capacity building.
GHI’s active engagement in global transdisciplinary partnerships enhances UW-Madison’s research opportunities, knowledge and technology exchange, joint funding opportunities, and the implementation of effective global health interventions. The Institute’s focus on multidisciplinary work, near-term impact, building local, national, and UW-Madison capacities, and the linking of academia and industry, hold promise for changing the lives of many while securing the financial resources required to sustain and expand GHI, thus further enabling the translation of future UW research into action.
To rival our peers’ thriving global health programs, GHI needs your investment to continue growing our university’s reputation as a leading global health research university. Your support for GHI demonstrates that UW-Madison can rise above siloed programs to develop a truly innovative, multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral, global health program with GHI serving as the catalyst.
We are grateful to partners like you who enable GHI to achieve new heights. This giving season, please consider donating to advance our mission. Your investment touches lives close to home, wherever that may be, and around the world. Every gift, regardless of size, makes a significant difference. Donating is simple. A one-time contribution or recurring gift can be set up online here.
Gracias, and On, Wisconsin!
