Born in Tamil Nadu, India, Dr. Krishna Ella graduated in Agricultural Sciences and moved to the US for his MS from the University of Hawaii and Ph.D., from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After working at the Medical University of South Carolina-Charleston, Dr. Ella returned to India in 1997 to establish Bharat Biotech International Limited, a multidimensional biotechnology company specializing in vaccines and biotherapeutics for human use.
Dr. Ella ensured that Bharat Biotech successfully developed and launched the world’s most affordable vaccine for Rotavirus, and the world’s 1st clinically proven and WHO pre-qualified Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine (TCV). Bharat Biotech, under Dr. Ella’s leadership, was the first company to file global patents for Chikungunya and Zika viruses and continues to cross major milestones in the development of these vaccines. Today, the company with direct & indirect investments of over $200 Million in to R&D, Clinical and manufacturing infrastructure, employs over 1600 people and has an impressive portfolio of over 65 global patents.
In addition, Dr. Ella is also the founder of Biovet and Innova Food Park. Biovet, given the utility and economic safety net that livestock provides to Indian farmers, is focussed on animal health vaccines. Through Innova, a food processing company with a USDA approved gamma irradiation facility, Dr. Ella hopes to enable Indian farmers to adopt advances in agricultural methods, improve post-harvest management practices and gain access to previously inaccessible market places through value added products.
Dr. Ella is a Member on numerous committees involved in shaping India’s science education and policy, including his current role on prominent Government of India bodies as Member- Scientific Advisory Committee to the Union Cabinet (SAC-C), Member- Governing Body, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) and Member- Technology, Information, Forecasting & Assessment Council (TIFAC).
