With “Deadly Foes: Why Mosquitoes and Ticks Matter to Global Health,” professor Susan Paskewitz will be the keynote speaker for the 14th annual Global Health Symposium: Advancing Health in Uncertain Times. Registration begins at 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 10, at Union South.
Paskewitz is professor and chair of the Department of Entomology in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. She is co-director of the Midwest Center of Excellence for Vector-Borne Disease funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and a member of the GHI Advisory Committee. Her research focuses on the medical importance of ticks and mosquitoes and the illness-causing pathogens they transmit. She also teaches classes in global health and medical entomology. The symposium is free and open to all. Registration is requested.
The annual symposium brings together colleagues from across disciplines and provides a forum for UW-affiliated faculty, staff, students and friends to present their work to improve health for humans, animals and the planet. The closing panel for the evening will discuss “Medications: Misuse, Abuse and What’s Next.” GHI Associate Director of Health Sciences James Conway will moderate the panel with:

- Trisha Seys Ranola, PharmD, CDE, CGP, clinical assistant professor and assistant director, Office of Global Health, UW-Madison School of Pharmacy

During concurrent oral sessions, presenters will explore how environment influences health, the benefits of quality improvement projects, how UW is working with communities worldwide, and educational leadership. Symposium Breakout Sessions Schedule
Sponsored by the UW-Madison Global Health Institute, the symposium is an opportunity for the campus-wide community to come together and celebrate and learn from each other. The first Global Health Symposium was organized in 2004 to connect students, faculty and staff who were participating in global health work. The event, like the Institute, has grown from the health sciences to include participants from across campus, recognizing that the determinants of health and disease are interlinked and need solutions from across disciplines.
