Unlocking mental health care: a call to action

This call to action was raised at the University of Wisconsin – Madison during an International Mental Health Learning exchange that brought together local Wisconsin and global African leaders in June of 2019. The event was sponsored by UW – Madison’s Global Health Institute, among other organizations. Unlocking mental health care puts a stop to shackling, imprisonment, separation and exclusion, and replaces these inhumane responses with effective care and respect for human rights and personal dignity. The African Studies Program is proud to welcome officials from Jimma University (Ethiopia) to campus, with the support of a GHI 2019 Visiting Scholars Grant, to discuss expanding cooperation between JU and UW-Madison, specifically in the medical field. After 40 years of partnership UW-Madison and the University of Guadalajara, Mexico, expand international collaboration

Planning for a new major in global health approved

The UW System recently approved a notice of intent from a committee led by entomology professor and chair Susan Paskewitz’s that plans for a new global health bachelor of science major. Building off the success of the Global Health Certificate, the new major will allow students to dig deeper into this topic area.
