Over the last two years, the UW Center for Cooperatives has significantly increased its outreach to economic developers with the goal of increasing the use of employee ownership as a tool for retaining businesses in local communities. As part of this work, UWCC staff has worked closely with the City of Madison, the South Central Federation of Labor, and Madison’s cooperative community on developing the Madison Cooperative Enterprises for Job Creation and Business Development Initiative. The Initiative will provide one million dollars annually for five years to support the creation of new cooperative businesses in Madison through start-up and conversions.
