Interdisciplinary Field Courses

*Note: the information below does not apply to the Undergraduate Certificate in Global Health. Undergraduate students interested in field courses should refer to the Undergraduate Core Courses, Electives & Field Courses.

Many global health courses are sponsored by the Global Health Institute. These include semester courses, field courses led by UW faculty, and independent field work. The Global Health Institute staff are available to assist UW graduate, health professionals, and certificate students to identify advisors, sites and field-based supervisors. Please note that all students who plan to pursue global health study abroad for credit must complete the following forms listed in the packets under each field course. The Institute does not support study abroad that is not for credit.

Students who wish to pursue study in countries on the warning list should make a request in writing and submit it to the Global Health Institute at least 4 months prior to the planned study. The request will be reviewed by a committee of faculty. Possible reasons for granting an exemption include: student will be pursing a unique educational experience that cannot be gained elsewhere and that is directly related to their graduate studies or career plans; student is a citizen of the country in question; student has considerable experience in the country in question. If your elective is approved fill out the waiver and hand it in to the GHI office.

Please note that there are pre-requisites for the Thailand and Uganda field courses that must be taken Spring semester. The 2 credit pre-requisite for the Thailand field course is “Health and Disease in Thailand-Pathogens, Animals, People, and Healing Plants in the Tropics” (PHS 650, section 40). The 2 credit pre-requisite for the Uganda field course is “Health and Disease in Uganda” (PHS 650, section 42). Registration begins November 9 for the pre-requisite semester courses.
